Will like to start this review with an immense thank you to David Cohn. It will be a long review, so you can move to the last paragraph if you do not want to read the whole thing and just want the gist of things. In the process of deciding which lawyer to go with for my trial, I met with 4-5 lawyers in the city. Google recommended lawyers who are specialists in the field of my case and then from a deeper research, I found another few based on their reputation, prominent cases they have taken and things they have published. My case wasn't so serious that I will end up in jail but it would have serious consequences on my career, immigration status and travel.
I decided to go with David solely based on our initial consultation meeting. He seemed very genuine and we had a good conversation regarding the case. His fees were the same or a bit less than others quoted me. I found the receptionist at the office to be friendly but very unprofessional. But I do not see her in the office anymore. Bringing this information here because I feel sometimes that can impact your judgement about the firm as a whole. Anyways, I paid the retainer and was told to wait while he got the disclosure and tried to see if we can get a plea deal.
Over the next few months we spoke roughly once a month regarding updates. I found that the crown wouldn't go for a plea deal and the trial was set. As my trial date came closer, I met with David to discuss the defence he has made for the case. I felt it wasn't enough. I searched online and read a few articles related to defence strategies and felt a bit nervous. I doubted if I made the right decision in choosing the lawyer. I mentioned that to David and he convinced me that he was doing the best as he could and will do everything to get the best result possible.
On the trial in court, I was extremely impressed with David. Sort of saw a new side to him that could only be seen in court. He is well known in the courts, extremely knowledgeable about the law, very sharp and well versed during his statements and questioning during the trial, and has good resources around him when he is looking for specific information. He was very honest with me that sometimes cases depend on the judges opinions, luck and that our case was not very strong. But in the end, I won the trial and was acquitted.
Choosing David was the best decision. I recommend people to meet with him. Sometimes on the phone and emails he can seem like he is short on time and wants to be quick to the point. That is why I recommend everyone to set up appointment with him and mention all your concerns in person. I hope none of my friends or family ever get into a legal situation which falls under criminal law, but if someone did, I will 100% recommend David Cohn to him/her.
